April 13, 2023: Overcoming Challenges of Using Swine Models for Neurodegenerative Diseases

NextGen Discovery Series | Kiho Lee, Ph.D.

The NextGen Precision Health Discovery Series provides learning opportunities for UM System faculty and staff across disciplines, the statewide community and our other partners to learn about the scope of precision health research and identify potential collaborative opportunities. The series consists of monthly lectures geared toward a broad multidisciplinary audience so all can participate and appreciate the spectrum of precision health efforts.

Information about this upcoming talk, including continuing education, is available below.

"Overcoming Challenges of Using Swine Models for Neurodegenerative Diseases"

Speaker: Kiho Lee, PhD, Associate Professor, College of Agriculture, Food & Natural Resources, University of Missouri

Date: April 13, 2023, noon-1 p.m.

Location: Tom and Linda Atkins Family Seminar Room, Roy Blunt NextGen Precision Health building

Description

Swine models closely recapitulate clinical signs and symptoms, therefore serving as an ideal preclinical model for many diseases also found in humans. By utilizing genetic modification, these swine models mirror clinical conditions. However, as a large animal species, unique challenges emerge as the animal models are used for research. The seminar will illustrate strategies to establish swine models by utilizing genome editing systems and discuss models that represent neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer’s disease.

About the Speaker

Kiho Lee

Kiho Lee graduated from Seoul National University with a bachelor's degree in Animal Sciences. He received his master’s and PhD from Purdue University, and post-doc training from the University of Missouri-Columbia. While at the University of Missouri, he generated immune-deficient pigs that could support growth and proliferation of human induced pluripotent stem cells. He is currently an associate professor in the Division of Animal Sciences at the University of Missouri. Dr. Lee’s lab currently focuses on designing genetically engineered large animal models for agriculture and biomedicine.
