Grammarly for Education

Menu

What is changing and when?

The free and premium versions of Grammarly, an AI-powered writing service, will no longer be available for use by employees and student employees across the four UM System campuses due to privacy and security concerns. This change will go into effect Jan. 9, 2025

We are making this change because certain versions of Grammarly incorporate AI tools that can scan users’ screens and collect the data that is being displayed. This poses security and privacy concerns due to its potential to collect sensitive information, such as protected student data, protected health information, personally identifiable information and more.

To protect the security of our information, employees and student employees will have the option to use the approved UM System Grammarly for Education license, which ensures data protection and security.

Students (non-employees or non-student workers)

To continue using Grammarly, update your Grammarly login information to your personal email address by Jan. 9, 2025

Grammarly incorporates AI tools that can scan users’ screens and collect the data that is being displayed. This poses security and privacy concerns due to its potential to collect sensitive information, such as protected student data, protected health information, personally identifiable information and more.

If you no longer wish to use Grammarly’s generative AI features, they can be switched off. Open your account settings, go to the Feature customization page, and switch off the generative AI settings.

Individuals who use their personal email address to access Grammarly should only use the service when working with public data classified as DCL1 because the free and premium versions of Grammarly allow the AI model to be trained using the information on your screen.
