Missouri Senate Debates IP Reform; Democrats Filibuster
Democrats held the Senate floor for over 10 hours Monday and Tuesday of this week to block the vote on a bill that would set a higher threshold for passing initiative petitions.
- SJR74, sponsored by Sen. Mary Elizabeth Coleman (R-Arnold), would require constitutional amendments on the ballot to pass in five of the state's eight congressional districts, in addition to achieving a statewide majority.
- Opponents say that under this proposal, just 1 in 5 voters could defeat initiative petitions.
- The bill was ultimately laid over Tuesday and is expected to be brought up again next week for consideration. Read more.
