Committee Approves FY24 Agriculture, Rural Development, Food and Drug Administration, and Related Agencies Bill
House Appropriations Committee – June 14, 2023
House Appropriations Full Committee met Wednesday for FY24 Markup, considering the Fiscal Year 2024 appropriations bill for the Agriculture, Rural Development, Food and Drug Administration Subcommittee, coming in $532 million (2.1%) below the FY23 enacted level and $3.622 billion (12.5%) below President Biden’s FY24 Budget Request. The measure was approved by the Committee, providing a total discretionary budget of $25.313 billion, of which $7.475 billion is offset by claw backs in the Inflation Reduction Act (IRA) and the American Rescue Plan. While the committee allocated $1.7 billion to National Institute of Food and Agriculture (NIFA) – $9.5 million (0.6%) decrease from FY23 – and $460 million to Agriculture and Food Research Initiative (AFRI) – $5 million increase from FY23 – funding for the Research Facilities Act was not provided.
House Appropriations Committee Releases FY24 Defense Appropriations Bill
House Appropriations Committee – June 14, 2023
The Defense bill funds agencies and programs under the jurisdiction of the Department of Defense (DOD) and Intelligence Community, including the Military Services, Central Intelligence Agency, and the National Security Agency. For Fiscal Year 2024, the bill provides $826.45 billion in new discretionary spending, which is $285.87 million over the President’s Budget Request and $28.71 billion – or 3.6% – over the FY23 enacted level.

Today, Transportation and Infrastructure Committee Chairman Sam Graves (R-MO), along with full Committee Ranking Member Rick Larsen (D-WA), Aviation Subcommittee Chairman Garret Graves (R-LA), and Aviation Subcommittee Ranking Member Steve Cohen (D-TN), introduced the Securing Growth and Robust Leadership in American Aviation Act, bipartisan legislation to reauthorize the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and aviation safety and infrastructure programs for the next five years.

After initially received 188 concept outlines for NSF Engines, NSF has now completed initial merit review of proposals, narrowing to the 34 semifinalists, and those not selected may be considered for an NSF Engine Development Award which will help teams build their initial ecosystems, cultivate the necessary partnerships and potentially compete for additional funding of up to $1 million over two years, in addition to the 44 NSF Engines Development Awards announced in early May.
