MU and UMHC Classes
ACT HEALTHY
Learn how to ACT HEALTHY! A new six-week class held over the lunch hour or after work can help you learn how to be successful making healthy changes in your life. Only 50-minutes, once a week can help you learn how to be successful doing what you want to do!! Classes are free to University of Missouri faculty and staff, and will be offered at various locations and times on campus. This is a research study sponsored by the Healthy for Life: T.E. Atkins Wellness Program and the School of Health Professions. The purpose of this project is to see if this self-management education program offered at the workplace can help employees make healthy changes in their lives.

Brown Bag Lunch
GetAbout Columbia will be providing a FREE brown bag lunch presentation about the benefits of active transportation, bicycle and gear selection, and safety. The presentation will be Sept. 29 from 12-1 p.m. in Memorial Union’s Stotler Lounge. Click here for a flier. GetAbout Columbia encourages you to walk or bike to work in September as a celebration of its Way to Go To Work program. The group will provide reminder cards that help you set goals of active commuting. You can turn in the card to the GetAbout office and receive a pedometer or a pants protector and become eligible for an active commuting grand prize. Along with words of encouragement and incentive gifts, Get About Columbia is also including activities for those who want a little more than a friendly boost. There are guided bike rides that will tour current and completed GetAbout infrastructure projects and offer information about these. Diabetes Management
The course "Diabetes Management! You can do it!" is designed to help patients self-manage their diabetes. It is being offered Wednesday mornings from 10 to 11:30 a.m. at the Green Meadows Family Practice Center, Green Team Conference Room. Instructors for the course are Melba Hall, a nurse at the Green Meadows Clinic, and Scottie Rawlings, a dietitian at the clinic. The course is free and each week covers a different topic, so patients can begin and end the course at any time. For more information, contact Ron Betz at (573) 882-9097.
Eat for Life
This is a 10-week non-dieting approach to creating a healthy relationship with your food, mind and body. There is a $60 registration fee, $20 reimbursement if you attend nine of the 10 classes. Classes are generally held every semester.

Million Step Pedometer Program
This is a non-stop program to address physical activity. Sign up any time and receive a pedometer and log book for $15. Walk 1 million steps and receive your money back, certificate and T-shirt; prizes are being given out for each million up to 5 million. To enroll, e-mail Healthy for Life.
Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction
Helping employees manage stress effectively is a key goal of Healthy for Life, the Thomas E. Atkins Wellness Program. The wellness program offers eight-week mindfulness-based stress reduction classes at minimal cost to benefit-eligible employees looking to manage today's busy lifestyles in a healthy way. For more information or to sign up, please contact Lynn Rossy, Ph.D. at RossyL@umsystem.edu. This 8–week class teaching meditation, yoga and other mind-body techniques for managing stress. For more information about MBSR, visit the Program section of this website. There is a $40 registration fee, $20 reimbursement if you attend eight of the nine classes.

The University of Missouri Employee Assistance Program (EAP) will provide a series of occupational stress workshops designed to help employees manage a wide variety of stressors connected to the work context. Beginning in January 2009, and recurring once monthly thereafter, the EAP will offer work-related stress management seminars on the following topics:

Occupational Sports-Adult
The City of Columbia Parks and Recreation Department and the MizzouRec Center offer a variety of athletic options for adults from summer recreation leagues to weekly aquatics classes. Check the calendars on both sites to find deadlines for sign-ups for teams. Gather a group of co-workers for volleyball, kickball or flag football.
Strength Conditioning
Strength Conditioning is offered this Fall at Memorial Union from 12:15-12:45 p.m. Classes are $1 each and there is no need to register. All experience levels are welcome to drop by. The instructor encourages attendees to bring a towel or mat. Click here for a schedule.

Healthy for Life recognizes that many off-campus employees won’t be able to join at At-Work meeting, so the wellness program is extending its 25 percent rebate to faculty and staff who enroll in a three-month Weight Watchers Online course for $65 and miss no more than one time recording your weight.
