In 1998, Manual Pacheco, President of the University of Missouri, recognized the importance of strengthening the leadership capacity of leaders throughout the UM System. At that time, the President appointed an ad-hoc committee that crafted recommendations for the development of what was originally termed the President’s Institute on Academic Leadership and Management. From the beginning, PALI was designed to support leadership development for leaders in academic and administrative units.
The PALI-Academic program began with a first class of academic leaders participating in the Leadership Development Program (LDP) in the fall of 2000. Composed primarily of academic department chairs and associate Deans from across the four campuses, the LDP has been extremely successful each year in increasing participant’s leadership knowledge and skills. In addition, participants have reported significant growth in their professional support networks and a greater sense of identity with the University of Missouri. More detailed information about the program, including resources and evaluation reports, can be found at PALI-Academic.
The PALI-Administrative program is designed for leaders of administrative units. The first class for the Administrative Leadership Development Program (ALDP) will begin in the spring of 2004. The ALDP focuses on leadership development opportunities and ongoing support to directors and others in similar positions across the University. Further information about this program can be found at PALI-Administrative.
